Has any astronauts been lost in space?
A total of 18 people have lost their lives either while in space or in preparation for a space mission, in four separate incidents. Given the risks involved in space flight, this number is surprisingly low.
Can fish survive in zero gravity?
On Earth, when a fish is taken from water, gravity makes its gills collapse so that it cannot get oxygen. In weightless space these same fish might easily "swim" through an atmosphere of 100 percent humidity, keeping comfortably moist: hydroponic fish, if you will. Moreover, can you swim in the air? For the human body to propel itself in air while supporting it's weight, the drag force could be overcome in air but the lift force to overcome gravity would very likely be too large. Hence humans cannot swim in air.
Why is space black?
Because space is a near-perfect vacuum - meaning it has exceedingly few particles - there's virtually nothing in the space between stars and planets to scatter light to our eyes. And with no light reaching the eyes, they see black. In respect to this, what makes the sun hot? The core of the sun is so hot and there is so much pressure, nuclear fusion takes place: hydrogen is changed to helium. Nuclear fusion creates heat and photons (light). The sun's surface is about 6,000 Kelvin, which is 10,340 degrees Fahrenheit (5,726 degrees Celsius).
What does space smell like?
Astronaut Thomas Jones said it "carries a distinct odor of ozone, a faint acrid smell...a little like gunpowder, sulfurous." Tony Antonelli, another space-walker, said space "definitely has a smell that's different than anything else." A gentleman named Don Pettit was a bit more verbose on the topic: "Each time, when I

Before the area became a desert, the sand was washed in by rivers or streams. When a region becomes arid, there is no vegetation or water to hold the soil down. The wind blows away the clay and organic matter. The desert sand is what's left.
